Our Mission

What We Do

Dogster’s Spay and Neuter Program (D-SNiP) provides low-cost spay and neuter services to companion animals in La Plata County.  Our organization’s mission is to end the problems of unwanted cats and dogs in our community by providing spay and neuter education and low-cost spay and neuter services to pet owners who want to spay/neuter their pets but cannot afford these procedures.

Studies show that one reason people don’t sterilize their animals is cost (ranging from $40-$180 depending on the animal’s size). So, D-SNiP meets this problem directly by subsidizing the cost of these procedures for community members who want to spay or neuter their pets, but cannot afford to do so.

How We Benefit the Community

Many people are shocked to learn that in just seven years, one female cat can produce 420,000 offspring, while one female dog can produce 67,000 offspring (according to the Humane Society of the United States.)

D-SNiP has based its efforts in Durango on other existing spay/neuter assistance programs. For example, Pueblo, Colorado, which opened a low-cost spay and neuter clinic eight years ago, is seeing results of its efforts. According to Hope Hemperly of Pueblo Collie/Sheltie Rescue, for the first time this spring, no bags of dead puppies or kittens were pulled from the river last year. Likewise, Seattle, Washington launched a low-cost spay/neuter assistance program in 1991.  In the following decade, approximately 32,000 fewer animals were euthanized, saving pet lives and saving the city approximately $3.4 million.  If Pueblo and Seattle can do this, we know Durango and La Plata County can, too.
